Materials Modeling Lab

Lab course, Ruhr University Bochum, 2025

Overview

In this lab course, students learn how to use finite element analysis (FEA) to study the microstructure–property relationships of materials with two phases. In the first step, representative volume elements (RVEs) of dual-phase microstructures are created with varying phase fractions and size distributions. In the second step, these microstructures are simulated in Abaqus under tensile loading. From the simulation results, students determine material properties such as Young’s modulus and yield strength, and analyze how these properties depend on the microstructure.
